A VPN (Virtual Private Network) not only boosts your gaming experience by enhancing internet speeds, but it also allows you to secure your data while accessing public networks and this is exactly what carders want. There are two main methods for setting up a VPN – routing or hotspot. Today we will discuss how to set up VPN Routing
VPN advantages
Using a VPN for your gaming console can provide a wide range of advantages, from enhancing your online privacy and security to improving your access to geo-blocked content. With a VPN, you can easily bypass restrictions imposed by internet service providers and enjoy fast and uninterrupted gaming sessions.
Set up VPN on Router
First of all if you put VPN on your WiFi-router, it means that all devices that using your WiFi automatically use VPN. Second not all routers support VPN, so check it to make sure.
1. Open the firmware
In this case, i use the router NETGEAR Orbi:
- Open router’s firmware in browser
- To double-check router’s IP address, open command prompt and type ipconfig to get the Default Gateway entry that points to your router.
- Enter address in browser’s address field, then sign in with username and password.
- Click on VPN service
2. Create DDNS
Enable VPN service. They will ask set up IP adress or DDNS. Both options work with VPNs, but in this case i will use DDNS.
- Signed up for a free DDNS account through Netgear.
- Accessed the Dynamic DNS setting in router.
- Logged into account.
3. Return to VPN settings
- Sign in with DDNS account
- Return to VPN settings
- Download configuration file for Windows
4. VPN Client
- Installing a VPN client on the device.
- PC use the Windows operating system.
- download and install the client package for Windows.
- Installed OpenVPN client
- Imported VPN configuration file to the client
The Mac and other mobile devices has also there package.
5. Change name
- Check, rename network connection to use new VPN network.
- Go to Settings > Network & Internet in Windows 10.
- Select option for Change adapter options.
6. OpenVPN Tap
Look for OpenVPN and change the name to your router’s name. in my case i use NETGEAR-VPN.
7. Connect
- Double-clicked on VPN client icon in System Tray to initiate connection.
- Status window indicates successful connection is established.
- Browsed to various websites.
- Data successfully sent and received, according to VPN client status window.
This don’t work with all routers. Some of them use DDO-WRT. Always make sure you have the right one, that’s why i recommend Netgear.
